Henry Bennett was born in Carrick, Donegal, Ireland in October 1895. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1911, and advanced to Leading Telegraphist in August 1915. Bennett served with H.M.S. Lowestoft (cruiser), April 1914 - September 1915, during which time she took part in the battles of Heligoland Bight and Dogger Bank.
Bennett subsequently served with H.M.S. General Wolfe, and advanced to Petty Officer Telegraphist in July 1918 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in November 1928).
