Joseph Herbert Jones was born in Plymouth on 9 July 1888 and commenced naval service as a Stoker 2nd Class on 14 January 1907. His medals for service in the Great War were sent to H.M.S. Southampton, and he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in February 1923. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in January 1929.
