Henry William Jones was born in Marylebone, London, on 17 July 1894, and commenced his naval service on 18 April 1910, as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. Impregnable. His medals for service in the Great War were sent to H.M.S. Ajax and he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in September 1927. He was shore pensioned in July 1934; recalled for service in August 1939, he was deemed unfit.
