Rowland Nicholas Austin Hill was born at Bridport, Dorset on 22 July 1873 and commenced his naval service as Stoker 2nd Class on 7 November 1893. He was discharged to shore, by purchase, on 31 December 1901, but subsequently re-engaged , and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in December 1909. He was advanced to Chief Stoker in 1912, when serving in H.M.S. Revenge, and was demobilised on 17 June 1919.
