Charles Thomas Gardiner was born at Oxford on 19 June 1882 and commenced his naval service on 18 July 1901 in H.M.S. Impregnable. He was discharged time expired on 1 August 1912 and transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve. Recalled for war service, for some time was serving on Defensively Armed Merchant Ships, and was finally demobilised on 15 February 1919. His medals for service in the Great War were sent to H.M.S. Wishart. He re-entered naval service and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in August 1921. Shore pensioned on 20 May 1926, he rejoined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 21 May 1926.
