John Spencer Knowles was born at Hareholme, Bacup, Lancashire on 30 April 1890 and commenced his naval service as a Stoker 2nd Class on 3 December 1910. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in January 1926, and was shore pensioned on 18 December 1932, as a Stoker Petty Officer.
