Arthur Trays was born at Torpoint, Cornwall on 14 October 1884 and commenced his naval service on 11 November 1903. His medals for service in the Great War were issued to him for service in H.M.S. Briton and his war service gratuity was paid when serving in H.M.S. Vivid. His service record is annotated that as Chief Writer he was posted for service to the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve.
