James McAdam was born in Bridgefoot, Cumberland, and attested for the Border Regiment at Workington, Cumberland. He served with the 11th (Lonsdale) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 November 1915 (also entitled to a 1914-15 Star), and was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. On this date the Battalion was involved in the attack on the Leipzig Salient. They advanced from assemble positions in Authuille Wood at 8:00 a.m. and came under very heavy machine gun fire from the Nord Werk on the right flank. The Commanding Officer and almost all the officers were killed, and the Battalion suffered total casualties that day of almost 500.

McAdam was amongst those killed; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
