Arthur Beer was born in Devonport on 19 March 1892 and enlisted in the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 11 May 1915. He served during the Great War predominately in H.M.S. Liverpool; advanced Engine Room Artificer 1st Class, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 19 May 1930.
