Samuel John Smith was born in Southampton on 14 February 1888 and served throughout the Great War in H.M.S. Agincourt, being present at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He subsequently served in the Royal Yacht H.M.Y. Alexandra, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in December 1927. He was shore pensioned in February 1928.
