The sugar cane plantation of Pachachaca, donated to the Jesuit Order in Spanish colonial times, passed into the hands of the widow of Antonio Arroz, a second-generation Argentinian planter, who took as her second husband Lazaro Letona, a doctor from El Salvador. Letona was so successful that by the late 1880s he had become the richest landowner in Abancay
