A post-War M.B.E. group of four awarded to Matron Miss Mildred F. Hughes, President of the Royal College of Nursing 1944-46

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, M.B.E. (Civil) Member’s 2nd type badge, silver; Jubilee 1935, unnamed as issued; Coronation 1937, unnamed as issued; Voluntary Medical Services Medal, with two Additional ‘Geneva Cross’ Award Bars (Miss Mildred F. Hughes) mounted as worn; together with the recipient’s British Red Cross Society State Registered Nurse Badge, gilt and enamel, nearly extremely fine (5) £240-£280

Miss Mildred F. Hughes trained at the Evelian Hospital for Children, and at Guy’s Hospital, London, where she subsequently held several residential posts. She was President of the Leicester Royal Infirmary Nurses’ League, and was employed as a Matron at Leicester Royal Infirmary during the Second World War. She was President of the Royal College of Nursing from 1944 to 1946.
