The armoured cruiser H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh was launched on 14 June 1904 and was part of the 1st Cruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland.

Wilfred Arnold Simpson was born in Birmingham on 17 August 1897 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 18 March 1915. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh from 17 June 1915 to 30 January 1917, and was advanced Able Seaman on 25 November 1915. He was shore discharged, time expired, on 16 August 1927, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 6 May 1929.
