The dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Erin was launched on 3 September 1913 and was part of the 2nd Battle Squadron at the Battle of Jutland, where she was the only British battleship not to fire her main gun.

Harry Thomas Alford was born in East Budleigh, Devon, on 6 November 1874 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 21 December 1889. Advanced Chief Petty Officer on 1 August 1914, he was awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 5 February 1914, and served throughout the Great War in H.M.S. Erin. He was shore pensioned on 26 February 1919.
