John Sharp was born in Dalmore, Nairn, Scotland, and attested for the Royal Highlanders at Edinburgh on 25 November 1881. He served with the 1st Battalion in Egypt and the Sudan from August 1882 to April 1886, and was discharged on 24 November 1893, after 12 years’ service.
