Three: Sergeant J. H. Bakewell, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 101 Squadron, killed in action when his Lancaster was shot down during a raid on Berlin on the night of 17/18 January 1943

1939-45 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; War Medal 1939-45, all unnamed as issued, together with named Air Council enclosure and named medal entitlement slip, this pasted on card, extremely fine (3) £200-£240

Sergeant James Henry Bakewell served in ‘B’ Flight, No. 101 Squadron and was killed in action on the night of 17/18 January 1943, in a raid on Berlin. The crew were on only their second full operation, having been forced to abort on three occasions and once being prevented from taking off because of problems on their own airfield. Their operational career spanned just nine days. He has no known grave and is commemorated by name on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey. Sold with further research.
