Henry Charles Jeffery was born at Devenport in March 1897 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in August 1916 as a Stoker Second Class. From the following November until the end of hostilities he served aboard on the pre-dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Albion, which during this period acted as a guard ship in the Humber estuary. Jeffrey was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in November 1931 whilst serving with the dreadnought battleship H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, having attained the rate of Leading Stoker. He was discharged with a pension in October 1938, but recalled the following June and saw active service during the Second World War aboard the destroyers H.M.S. Eclipse and H.M.S. Salisbury.
