Douglas Reginald Legg was born at Southampton in November 1879 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in July 1900 as a Domestic Second Class. He saw active service during the Great War aboard the submarine depot ship H.M.S. Maidstone and while still on her crew was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in January 1919, having attained the rate of Officer’s Steward First Class. He was invalided out of the service in June 1925, suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis.
