Henry Kinghorn was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, on 21 September 1880 and enlisted in the Royal Navy on 24 September 1898. Advanced Able Seaman on 13 September 1900, he is confirmed on the Africa General Service Medal roll for Somaliland 1902-04, for service in H.M.S. Mohawk. He was invalided from the service on 10 October 1907, but saw Great War service with the Mercantile Marine.
