Ernest Charles Bowsher was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire, on 15 May 1911 and enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 15 July 1926. Advanced Petty Officer, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst serving in Egypt in H.M.S. La Malouine on 15 May 1944.
