John Burgess was born in Dublin on 5 July 1889 and enlisted in the Royal Navy on 19 December 1914. His Great War service included service in H.M.S. Benbow, in which ship he was present at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 6 February 1930 and the George V Silver Jubilee Medal on 7 May 1935. Recalled for Second War service, he received a War Gratuity for service in H.M.S. Dartmouth.
