Robert Bolton was born in Kirby Moor Side, Yorkshire, on 14 February 1873 and enlisted in the Royal Navy on 18 June 1892. He served in H.M.S. Dryad from 7 December 1899 to 4 February 1903, and was discharged, term expired, on 18 June 1904, joining the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day.
