John Croll Scott (1853-1922), second son of James Scott, was a third-generation weaver from Dundee. His father had enlarged the family’s textile business in the city and built up an extensive export trade with the US and Argentina. After the death of the father in 1908 Scott moved to London to run the City operation of James Scott & Sons Ltd, but died at his home in Lancaster Gate from the effects of a chill caught while playing golf. The Silver Cross medal was the second scratch prize for the club’s autumn medal competition. It was instituted by Duncan MacLachlan in 1846 and won by Mr Scott in 1904 with a score of 89.
