Albert West was born at Moira Toun, Stoke Damerel, Devon, on 2 June 1870, and joined the Royal Navy at Chatham as a Boy 2nd Class on 14 September 1885. Advanced Able Seaman whilst serving in H.M.S. Tourmaline on 1 September 1889, he served in the armoured battleship H.M.S. Monarch during the Boer War before being shore transferred on 15 June 1900, time expired.
