Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Modder River, Wittebergen (3597 Cpl. J. Annan, 1st. High: Lt. Infy.) light contact marks to obverse field, toned, good very fine £100-£140

John Annan was born in Banff in 1871 and attested for the Highland Light Infantry at Glasgow on 6 May 1890. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India from 10 March 1891 to 21 January 1898, and took part in the operations on the North West Frontier of India 1897-98 (entitled to the India General Service Medal 1895-1902 with clasp Punjab Frontier). Transferring to the Reserve on 25 January 1898, he was recalled to the Colours on 23 July 1898, and served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 23 October 1899 to 14 August 1902 (additionally entitled to the King’s South Africa Medal with two clasps), being promoted Corporal on 13 December 1900. He was discharged in South Africa with the rank of Sergeant on 14 August 1902, after 12 years and 101 days’ service.
