YORKSHIRE, Doncaster, oval ivory, Ladies Stand, undated, back named (C.B. Denison, Esq), 50 x 35mm, 6.13g (W –; D & W –; cf. DNW 176, 284). About very fine, very rare, pierced for suspension £150-£200

Christopher Beckett Denison (1825-84), second son of Edmund Beckett-Denison, 4th Bt (1787-1874), of Gledhow Hall, Leeds, and Doncaster, banker and chairman of the Great Northern Railway; educ. Durham, Uppingham and the East India Company College; entered Indian Civil Service 1845, civil commissioner in the Punjab and Oudh; attached to EIC military during the Mutiny and was present at the siege of Lucknow (medal and clasp); succeeded his father as a director of the Great Northern Railway, 1865; Conservative MP for the Eastern division of the West Riding of Yorkshire, 1868-80; died unmarried in Ireland, October 1884. C.B. Denison was a signatory on banknotes of Beckett & Co, known from Retford (Outing 2432a).
