Andrew Barker was born in Barrow Hill, Derbyshire, on 7 October 1873, and joined the Royal Navy on 13 April 1896. He served in H.M.S. Dido from 1 October 1898 to 11 January 1902, and was advanced Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class on 1 November 1904.
