Hammer Price:
£9,000

Henry Hase, One Pound, 8 April 1820, No 1, payable to Mr. Henry Hase, vignette of Britannia at top left, countersigned at bottom right (Dugg. B201c). Good very fine, extremely rare (£8,000-10,000)

The Bank commenced printing serial numbers on the note issue in 1808 with the sequence running from 1 to 99,999. There are no records available detailing the sequences completed during the period when Henry Hase was in office, but notes with serial numbers of less than two digits are very rarely seen and we believe this to be the first pre-20th century Bank of England note with serial No.1 to be in private hands. Illustrated on back cover
