Provenance: Acquired 1970.

The Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first underground system, opened in 1863, only eight years after the launch of the original
Daily Telegraph & Courier in 1855, London’s first penny newspaper. Ivory tokens for this type of VIP use were almost universally replaced by gold or silver by 1870.
