Estimate: £800–£1,200

Roy Marius (b1833 died?), an oil painting on canvas entitled ‘L’ambuscade’ (85cm x 150cm) signed and dated 1883, a rare large scale work for this well known military artist of the late 19th century, the subject is a probable incident from the Franco Prussian War, two small parties of French infantry some of whom are wounded are making what is possibly a last effort of defiance and are debouched on either side of a road behind an angled wall and a small mound, the enemy are not far off as a cloud of dust at the top of the road precedes their approach, contained in a large wood and plaster frame, small holes and tears overall requires careful restoration £800-1200

Roy Marius born Lyon 1833 was a student of Gustave Boulanger and Jule Lefebvre; he first exhibited at the Paris salon in 1880, he received a Medal of Honour in 1882 and a Third Class Medal in 1883.
