A Second World War Italy operations M.M. group of four awarded to Gunner F. H. Brown, Royal Artillery

Military Medal
, G.VI.R. (966116 Gnr. F. H. Brown, R.A.); 1939-45 Star; Italy Star; War Medal 1939-45 good very fine and better (3) £600-700

M.M. London Gazette 21 September 1944. The immediate recommendation states:

‘On 18 May 1944, at about 1230 hours, a signal maintenance post of this Regiment received a direct hit from a 15cm. shell. The shell penetrated the outer wall of the house and the inner walls and ceilings collapsed. One man was killed instantly and two severely wounded. Gunner Brown was in the same room as these men. He himself was badly shocked and wounded in the left arm. Despite other shells falling, he dug out Gunner Bottomely, carried him to his 15cwt. truck, drove him to the Casualty Clearing Station, a journey of some six miles, and returned. When he returned to the maintenance post he collapsed. By his gallant and immediate action Gunner Brown may well have saved the life of Gunner Bottomley. For this very gallant and prompt action in heavy enemy shell fire, Gunner Brown is most strongly recommended for the immediate award of the Military Medal.’

Frederick Henry Brown, a Londoner, was serving in 70th Medium Regiment, R.A., part of 5 Corps, at the time of the above described incident.
