Cecil Robert Bates was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery T.F. in 1900 and attained the rank of Captain in 1908. He was placed on the Reserve of Officers in 1913. With the outbreak of war he entered the France / Flanders theatre with the 5th Divisional Artillery on 14 September 1914. He later served as Brigade Major to the 4th Australian Divisional Artillery. For his war services he was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order and awarded the Military Cross. Sold with copied research gazette entries.
