Joseph John (Aloysius) Nagles, who was born in Cape Town in October 1898, enlisted in the 1st South African Infantry Brigade in March 1918. He subsequently saw service in France between August 1918 and March 1919 and was discharged on his return to South Africa in the latter year. Nagles re-enlisted in the South African Defence Forces in July 1941 and served at various S.A.A.F. Air Schools for the remainder of the War, largely being employed as a fabric worker or tailor in the rank of Corporal.
