Edward Porter was born in the Parish of St. Annes, Nantwich, Cheshire and entered into the Army in 1882. With the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment he served in Egypt, being present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir and at the action at Abu Klea Wells, 16 February 1885. In the latter, he received a gunshot wound to the right leg. He was discharged to the Army Reserve in 1889 and discharged from the Reserve in 1894.
Irish Medals by Cresswell lists Porter as being one of the 85 men of the regiment entitled to the two clasps. Sold with copied research papers and an extract from The Pictorial World of the Royal Irish Regiment at Tel-el-Kebir carrying the trenches at the point of the bayonet.
