William Packett was born in Grahamstown, South Africa on 11 November 1874. He entered the Cape Police in 1895 and took part in the Bechuanaland campaign of 1896/97. During the Boer War he was present at the siege of Kimberley. Returning to the Police after the war, he was based in Grahamstown in 1903 and in 1916 was appointed Detective Probationer. Transferring to Krugersdorp in 1918, he was promoted Detective Sergeant the following year. He was discharged in November 1925. Sold with copied papers detailing service.
