Leonard Francis Tyrwhitt was born on 29 October 1863, the son of Sir H. Tyrwhitt, 3rd Baronet and Baroness Berners. He was educated at Marlborough College and Magdalene College, Cambridge where he gained a M.A. Entering the Ministry, he trained at Wells Theological College, following which, he was Curate at Henley-on-Thames and then at Hendon. Tyrwhitt was later Chaplain aboard H.M.S. Renown during the Prince and Princess of Wales’s Visit to India 1905-06, for which he was awarded the M.V.O. on 11 March 1906. He was Vicar of Fenton 1895-1907, Rector of Rolleston, 1907 onwards and Vice-Provost of Denstone, 1906 onwards. In 1910 he was appointed canon of St. George’s Chapel , Windsor and was Chaplain-in-Ordinary to the King. During the Great War he was Acting-Chaplain to the Forces, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 6 Novemer 1914 and was subsequently wounded and mentioned in despatches. In 1918 he was Deputy Assistant Chaplain-General. For his war services he was awarded the O.B.E. He died on 7 July 1921.
