A. W. Barrington Foote was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 14 September 1914 with the 4th Hussars and entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 October 1914. Listed as a Temporary Lieutenant with the 11th Hussars by May 1915, Temporary Captain with the 12th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry, 21 August 1915, promoted Captain on 25 June 1916 and with the 3rd Reserve Regiment of Cavalry by April 1918. On 13 July 1918 he was appointed a Captain (Administration) in the Royal Air Force.
