W. Tooke entered the Royal Flying Corps on 10 November 1913 as a recruit and direct entrant. As an Air Mechanic Class 2 with the Aircraft Park, he served in France from 16 August 1914. Tooke was promoted Flight Sergeant (Photographer) on 1 February 1917 and by April 1918 was a Chief Mechanic serving in the Royal Air Force.
