James Russell was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire and enlisted at Glasgow. Serving with the Scots Guards he entered the France / Flanders theatre of war on 7 October 1914. He was killed in action on 18 December 1914, aged 27 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial. He was the only son of James and Harriet Russell of Ladyburn, Greenock. Entitled to the clasp to the 1914 Star.
