Francis Shearman, who was born in July 1834, was first commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in January 1855. A Captain in the 1st West India Regiment by the time of the Ashantee War of 1873-74, he served in the early actions on the coast but was in reserve during the advance on Coomassie. Shearman was advanced to Major in November 1875 and placed on the Retired List with the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1877.
