William Lane, who was born in the parish of Alderbury, Salisbury, enlisted in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers direct from the Royal Wiltshire Militia in August 1858. It would seem he did not qualify for the ‘Coomassie’ clasp on account of suffering from bouts of fever during his time on the Gold Coast between 1873-74. Lane was finally discharged ‘as unfit for further service’ at Netley in April 1877, aged 44 years.
