Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea, V.R., large, silver (Joseph Tregose, for gallantry in saving the Crew of the “Walton Muncaster” in June 1857) light edge bruising and generally scuffed, otherwise very fine £350-450
Awarded for ‘gallant and distinguished services to the “Walton Muncaster,” wrecked off Chili [27 June 1857]. Joseph Tregose experienced much hardship and suffering, in addition to the loss of his clothes, and the mate Furnice lost his life in the attempt.’
Joseph Tregose, a seaman of the Denis Brundrit, received the silver medal from the Board of Trade and an award of £20 from H.M. Government. The master and one of the mates of the same ship each received silver medals, whilst the widow of the mate Furnice received an award of £10 from H.M. Government. Sold with some further details.
