Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (2582 Cr. Serjt. Alexr. Mitchell, 2nd Batt. 60th Rifles) contact marks and edge bruising, otherwise very fine £80-100

Alexander Mitchell was born in the Parish of Johnston, Renfrew and originally enlisted in the 74th Regiment at Glasgow in February 1848, aged 17 years. Quickly transferring to the 60th Rifles, he went on to win entitlement to the South Africa Medal 1834-53 and a no-clasp Indian Mutiny Medal for services in the field in the Shahabad District. Advanced to Sergeant in July 1858, Mitchell latterly transferred to the Royal North Down Militia, and was discharged at Winchester as a Sergeant-Major in 1868, having recently been awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal with £5 gratuity.
