Frederick Edgar Coram was born in Exeter in August 1900 and enlisted in the Royal Marines in July 1918. Qualifying for a single British War Medal 1914-20 for services at the R.M. Depot, Deal, he afterwards joined the Plymouth Division and remained a regular until transferring to the Royal Fleet Reserve in August 1930. Coram, who was awarded his R.F.R. L.S. Medal in January 1934, was mobilised in September 1938, briefly served in the cruiser Caradoc at towards the end of the following year, but was discharged as unfit for further service in November 1939.
