William Greer Turle was born on 25 March 1839, and entered the Army as an Ensign in the 60th Rifles on 1 February 1856. He served with the 1st Battalion in the Indian Mutiny, including the actions on the Hindun, battle of Badli-ke-Serai, the capture of the heights before Delhi, and the subsequent siege operations until he was dangerously wounded on 10th August 1857.

Turle was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1858, and to Captain in April 1868, being placed shortly afterwards on half-pay. He retired with the honorary rank of Major on 1 July 1881, and lived for many years at Newton Stacey, near Stockbridge, Hampshire. Major Turle was an expert and great authority on dry-fly fishing and his name will be forever perpetuated amongst fishermen by the Turle knot for eyed-flies which he devised. Major Turle died at his house, Newton Stacey, on 27 January 1909.
