Æthelred II (978-1016), Small CRVX type, Cambridge, Leofwine, leofpin m¯o grat, portrait with sceptre and hair ties behind head, reads angrx, 1.13g/12h (BEH –; N p.122, fig. 7; S 1149 var.). Very fine or better, excessively rare £800-£1,000

Leofwine is not known as a Cambridge moneyer (Jacob, SCMB 1984, p.38), but is attested at Lincoln and Stamford during Last Small Cross and at Stamford in Long Cross. This intriguing coin has long ties behind the head in the style of the Intermediate Small Cross (ISC) coins, and one is tempted to suggest it is an ISC die to which a sceptre has been added. (EMC has a heading ISC Sceptre, but no coins listed in the category)
