Patrick Mitchell was born in the Parish of Taum, County Galway, and enlisted into the 45th Foot at Ballyhaven, County Mayo, on 16 August 1802, at the age of 22, for unlimited service. He had previous service in the 15th Foot from 1 February 1799 to 30 April 1802. He was discharged with chronic hepatitis, at Columbo on 5 March 1823, with a pension of 2/- per diem. His conduct had been excellent and he had served in the Peninsula during the whole of the war in that country. He was then employed as a Barrack Sergeant until 22 December 1855, when his pension was increased to to 2/3d. per diem. He died at Galway on 12 June 1860, aged 79, his pension then being 2/6d. per diem. (Hayward’s Gazette refers)
