Thomas Johnston was born in Govan, Glasgow, in 1876 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Glasgow on 6 January 1902. He served with 140th (Fincastle’s Horse) Company, 31st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 17 April to 18 October 1902, and was discharged on 26 October 1902, after 294 days’ service.
