E. Nicholson attested for the Hampshire Regiment (Territorial Force) and served overseas with the 1st/7th Battalion in India. Returning to the U.K. in 1915, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Army Veterinary Corps on 6 August 1915. He served with the Army Veterinary Corps during the Great War on the Western Front, and was advanced temporary Captain whilst serving at the School of Farrriership at Aldershot.
