George Dollery, a job boy from Grafton, Sussex, was born on 21 June 1883. Enlisting in the Royal Navy for Boy Service on 12 September 1899, he was advanced Able Seaman on 3 March 1914. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Mersey, and was present in her when she bombarded German troops and artillery posts during the Battle of Yser in October 1914, and the following year in German East Africa, where she assisted in the destruction of the German Light Cruiser S.M.S. Konigsberg. He was invalided from the service on 22 November 1917.
